Liminality derives from the Latin word limen and means “threshold”. In today’s meaning the term describes political and cultural change. During liminal periods social hierarchies may be reversed or temporarily dissolved, continuity of tradition may become uncertain, and future outcomes, once taken for granted, may be thrown into doubt. The sense of identity dissolves, bringing about disorientation and a collapse of order, but also the possibility of new perspectives and renewal. Liminal periods are both destructive and constructive.
In photography and Internet culture “liminal spaces” convey a sense of nostalgia, lostness and uncertainty. The feeling of disorientation is expressed by showing places in which reality is suspended and surreal. Themes are transitional places such as train platforms, halls, staircases, lonely streets, gas stations etc, usually without human beings.
