Liminal Spaces

Liminality derives from the Latin word limen and means “threshold”.

In today’s meaning the term describes political and cultural change. The sense of identity dissolves, bringing about disorientation and a collapse of order, but also the possibility of new perspectives and renewal.

In photography and Internet culture “liminal spaces” convey a sense of nostalgia, lostness and uncertainty. The feeling of disorientation is expressed by showing places in which reality is suspended and surreal. (source: Wikipedia)

Liminal spaces are spaces of transition, a stop on a journey into the unknown. The gas station symbolizes that stop along the road: a place to pause, to refuel, and then, to move on. The gas station may also be a station on humankind’s journey: it represents the arrival of a new technology, making the road ahead uncertain.
